Chapter 15

The Scheme

Snow was falling in Parea, and Jeremiah Andovier observed the annual winter preparations with an excess of melancholy. The temperature in Castle Alterna remained comfortable—even the king’s chambers on the thirteenth floor were expertly sealed against the cold with hides that had been deemed unfit for leather armor. Even so, the atmosphere of the corridors rang hollow and somber with Relaina’s absence ever on his mind.

Jeremiah left his study to join Christine in the seventh floor lounge, nodding at servants hanging hides against the open air of the sixth floor. The guards outside the lounge nodded, muttering, “Captain,” as he entered the room.

“Brother.” Christine stood from her chair and handed him a piece of parchment. His heart leapt at the sight of the familiar handwriting.

Mother,

I read the letter you sent to an old friend. I am with him, and he is a kind host, with a large house. He’s given me your old rooms to stay in.

I’m safe here, or as safe as I can be. I want you to know that I miss you terribly, and I worry for your safety as well. I have found an old friend too, and while he knows many things, he is not a traitor. All of you at home should be vigilant—a traitor may still be among you.

The man Father mistrusts is not an evil man. He is, in fact, a better man than many others I know. I am safe in his company, and he is safe in mine. We have been working with your friend to help make our kingdoms safe once more.

I’ll write again as soon as I can. Please give my love to my brother and sister, and my uncle. I have no idea how he ever could have left all of the books in this exquisite library behind.
